Breast Lift Surgery

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to improve the look of sagging or droopy breasts that are the result of various factors such as:

A breast lift may be a good option for you if:

  • Your breasts are sagging or droopy and have lost their shape and “perkiness”
  • Your breasts have a flatter, extended or longer shape or are pendulous
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below your breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point down
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • Uneven breasts – one breast is lower than the other.

Sagging breasts can affect a woman’s confidence but can also present physical issues such as swinging breasts, inability to find clothes that fit your top half properly, reduced self-esteem and other issues.

A breast lift does not involve the insertion of an implant and is suitable for those women who are happy with the size and volume of their breasts, however, they just want them “lifted”, raised or reshaped. A breast lift can also help with asymmetry (when one breast is bigger or a different shape to the other). When a patient undergoes a breast lift surgery, the surgeon will contour the breasts as the tissues are tightened, reshaped and extra skin is removed.

One of the most important things when planning a breast lift is to ensure your surgeon understands exactly what you want the end result to be. Considerations include the shape of your breast, positioning of nipples (nipple and areola repositioning is often required as a part of a breast lift), size and appearance of the areola (this can often become larger or darken as a result of pregnancy or age).

Breast lift surgery will not significantly change the size of your breasts, and it has limits with regards to a change in shape, ie. if you want a lot more upper pole volume, you may not get it simply with a lift. Depending on your breast volume to begin with, Dr Bill may recommend that you also need a breast lift with implants. In some cases where there is too much volume, your surgeon may recommend a breast reduction and lift to get your desired results.

Most surgeons recommend waiting to have a breast lift until you have finished having children and breastfeeding as if you have a breast lift and then have children, you run the risk of requiring a second lift later.
